Student loan forgiveness in 2026
The forgiveness timelines under RAP, IBR and PSLF - and the tax catch.
In 2026 there are two main forgiveness routes. PSLF forgives your balance after 120 qualifying payments (10 years) in public service, tax-free. Income-driven forgiveness comes later: new IBR after 20 years, old IBR after 25, and RAP after 360 payments (30 years). Income-driven forgiveness may be taxable; PSLF is not federally taxed. The new tiered Standard plan has no forgiveness. General information, not advice.

Frequently asked questions
How long until federal student loans are forgiven?
It depends on the path. PSLF forgives after 120 qualifying payments (10 years) in public service. Income-driven forgiveness arrives later: new IBR after 20 years, old IBR after 25 years, and RAP after 360 payments (30 years).
Is forgiven student loan debt taxed?
PSLF forgiveness is not federally taxed. Income-driven forgiveness (RAP/IBR) can be treated as taxable income federally depending on the rules in effect at the time, and some states tax it. This is general information - confirm the current treatment with a tax professional and studentaid.gov.
Did OBBBA change forgiveness?
Yes. OBBBA created RAP (30-year forgiveness, PSLF-eligible), kept IBR (20/25-year forgiveness), and is phasing out SAVE/PAYE/ICR. The new tiered Standard plan has no forgiveness - it is fully repaid. The treatment of past SAVE forbearance months toward forgiveness is unsettled - verify your count at studentaid.gov.
